Welcome back to Auburn!
As the summer season ends and the influx of students returns, Auburn becomes, once again, the loveliest, and busiest, village on the plains. School is right around the corner, but what must come first? Sorority Recruitment.
Girls are stocking their tote bags, prepping their fans, and ultimately, shopping for clothes, readying for recruitment. We encourage you to take advantage of the boutiques in your lovely village, and here are some recommendations for what can be worn during those crazy two weeks.
August 6: Ice Water Teas
In Ice Water Teas, you will meet with your Pi Chi group to watch introductory videos of all 18 sororities on Auburn’s campus, and in return, they will be watching the videos each of you submitted. This will allow you to develop a sense of what you like and what you don’t, giving a good base to begin with! For the videos you submit, we suggest a cute dress or top, like a dress from Behind The Glass or a top from Ellie. The focus of your attire during the virtual watch party, however, is purely comfort. Try some workout shorts from The Pants Store or a classic, Auburn t-shirt from J & M. A cute tennis skirt and baseball hat from The Pants Store would also be a perfect outfit! Looking for shoes? Find the perfect pair of tennis shoes to complete your fit at High Country Outfitters, with Hokas, On Clouds, and Nikes galore.
August 7-9: Philanthropy Round
This is the first opportunity for potential new members to visit each sorority, meet the sisters, and gain an initial feel for the 18 sororities on campus. In such a hectic yet thrilling time, you’ll want to make sure you feel comfortable in your choice of attire. The Philanthropy Round of Recruitment is the most casual of all the rounds, as you will be wearing your Panhellenic Recruitment t-shirt provided for you. We recommend comfortable bottoms and shoes that showcase your personal style! Charming Oaks and Elisabet Boutique have got your back, with plenty of options for denim, tailored, or relaxed shorts. Want to dress it up? Reach for a midi skirt or flowy shorts instead! There are a multitude of choices for you in Downtown Auburn. Go for your comfortable but well-kept shoes, but if you are thinking of new ones, there are plenty of options at Charming Oaks such as Steve Madden boots, cute sandals, and adorable fashion sneakers. Regardless of your choices, remember to wear what you are most confident and comfortable in, as well as focus on connection and familiarity this first in-person round!
August 10-12: Sisterhood Round
During Sisterhood Round, women tend to get more dressed up. A dress suitable for church or a nice dinner is recommended. These options can be found in any sort of style at Fab’rik, with their wide variety of dresses suitable for any personality. If you want to spice it up with some beautiful jewelry, Therapy Boutique will be your best friend! This round, the shoes most common will be comfortable heels or adorable sandals, ensuring your comfort while showcasing your style! We recommend bringing comfortable shoes to wear between parties.
August 13: Preference Round
This is the day! The last round of recruitment, and you will have made it through. This is the dressiest round of all. A dress you would wear to a formal church or wedding reception will be perfect! Dresses can be found at Elisabet, Ellie, or even Behind the Glass - the options are limitless! You will spend the majority of the time sitting so you could wear heels if you wanted. Black dresses are NOT required for Preference, so make sure to have some fun with colors and patterns. Accessories are a great way to enhance your style, and using pieces from Downtown Auburn boutiques would be a convenient talking point. ;) Wrapsody has some beautiful pieces waiting to be your arm candy. Be confident in who you are and, don’t worry, we know you’ll look fantastic.
August 14: Bid Day
Excitement is through the roof! Recruitment is over, and you are about to run home to your sisters. It’ll be hot, in August in Jordan-Hare, so dress practically. A cute tennis skirt and an athletic top would do the trick, available at The Pants Store. An Auburn t-shirt would also be a classic choice, from either Stamp or J&M Bookstore. Once you “run home” to your girls, you will receive a sorority jersey with your letters on it - your first piece of Panhellenic memorabilia! Each and every girl is different, but finding the girls who make your Auburn experience all the more amazing is what recruitment is for. We are so excited for you today.
Some things to remember:
Here are just a couple of warnings before you head into recruitment. Remember that the goal is to showcase your personality! Lean away from tight dresses, short skirts, or low cut tops, instead going for something flattering and chic. This will also help you to be more focused on the parties and not have to readjust your outfit every minute. Be aware of the hot temperatures and plan accordingly, so sweatpants or leggings might not be your best bet. Shoes are crucial to having a comfortable experience, as high heels or unsupportive sandals may hurt more than help you. We don’t want blisters all week! You are going to have the best time settling into the Auburn community, and we just want to make that transition as easy as possible. If you got here and are worried about not being fully prepared, come try some options at any of our fabulous boutiques. We are sure you will find something amazing and just right for you!
Written for Downtown Auburn by Grace Steele
As someone who loves to travel for away games and visit other college towns, I wanted to provide a little guide that can guarantee you have the best gameday experience when visiting Auburn! Keep in mind, our town has so much to offer, but this is going to center more on Downtown Auburn.
Thursday Afternoon Arrival: Congrats, you made it! You are ready to roll right in and grab a drink. Head over to our newest restaurant, Tavern on the Traxs. They have a wonderful back patio with comfy seating and a patio bar. Grab an appetizer, too!
Thursday Night: Our culinary scene is incredible! We recommend dinner at Acre, The Hound , The Depot, Esposito’s or Hamilton’s.
Thursday “late” Night: Head over to The Collegiate Hotel. They have an amazing patio(with an Instagram-worthy mural) and a rooftop bar. They even have live music this Thursday evening.
Friday Morning: If you just need a little coffee to get your day going, swing into Bitty and Beau’s or Auburn Oil Co. Booksellers. If you want a nice breakfast, check out Ariccia (inside the AU Hotel and Conference Center). If you want a quick breakfast, Big Blue Bagel or Mo’Bay Beignet is great, too.
After Breakfast: The weather is unseasonably cool right now, so head over to Chewacla State Park. There are over 600 acres featuring hiking trails, a lake, playground, waterfalls, bike trials and more! Read more about Chewacla.
Friday Lunch: You have probably worked up an appetite. If you are wanting to sit down and grab a cold beer, Mellow Mushroom or Drafthouse are great and both have wonderful beer selections! If you don’t mind waiting in a line, then check out Irritable Bao or Taco Mama. These are counter-service restaurants that our locals go crazy for!
Friday Afternoon: Now it’s time to get some shopping done. If you are an Auburn fan and need some gear, head over to J&M Bookstore or Stamp. Need a hostess gift or something to bring the tailgate host, go to Wrapsody or Auburn Art. Need a cute, new gameday outfit, Behind the Glass, Charming Oaks, Ellie, Elisabet Boutique, fab’rik and Therapy are all walking distance of each other. For the guys, The Locker Room will have you dressed your best! Grab a snack when you finish up all that shopping at The Auburn Popcorn Company.
An alternative to shopping - go make your own candle at The Auburn Candle Company.
Friday Night: You will notice the town getting a lot busier! Try one of the restaurants we mentioned for Thursday night if you want a nice, fancier option. For quick-service but still yummy, Little Italy Pizza and Moe’s BBQ are fantastic(both have indoor and outdoor seating).
Friday(late) Night: If you want the full experience, then you have to go to Southeastern or 17/16. They both will have live music. If you are older and don’t care to be among all the college students, then head upstairs at Southeastern or go to Avondale.
Saturday: After breakfast(see Friday recommendations) snap a photo at the War Eagle wall, grab lemonade at Toomer’s, finish the shopping you missed on Friday and find a place to tailgate or watch the game(if you aren’t going). Halftime is a great, local sports bar with big TVs if you need somewhere to watch the game. Need food for the tailgate, Guthrie’s or Whataburger can offer bulk serving sizes.
After the Game: If we win, take part in one of the best college football traditions, rolling Toomer’s Corner! Win or lose - Grab a sweet treat at The Milkshake Bar! It will cheer you up!
Other Important Info to Know:
We have two parking decks. One off of Wright St. and the other off of Burton St. You will want to use these! It’s $1 an hour with no max time limit. Wright St. deck is $30 to park on gameday. More info on parking.
Every Friday before a home football game, we celebrate Come Home to the Corner. We will pass out gameday buttons at 4 pm, hold a pop-up merch shop(Auburn t-shirts that support our merchants association) and we have live music near Toomer’s Drugs from 6-9 pm. It is also an Entertainment District from 4-10 pm which means you can purchase a drink and take it to-go.

We are back with another Enneagram number, type Six. This one is also not an easy number for me to write about. I feel like it should be since I am married to a Six, but I kept questioning myself out of fear that I would get it wrong. Now, I am acting like a six. A six is known as “The Loyalist”. They are trustworthy, they are honest and they will make you feel safe. They do tend to worry about making the right decisions and can become anxious easily. I don’t think that is a bad trait to have, though. Sixes can take these traits and they will make great leaders, employees and friends.
Retail for a Six: Charming Oaks - Sixes can get hung up on the “what ifs”. “what if I can’t find something to wear”, “what if they have nothing that fits me”. These could all be valid concerns for a six. So, the safest option for a six would definitely be Charming Oaks. It is one of the largest retailers in downtown which means they have a ton of inventory.
Restaurant for a Six: Mellow Mushroom - Sixes may question things, like “Is this the right decision”. Well, let me tell you what you will not question….pizza! You can’t walk into Mellow Mushroom and feel like you made a bad decision. The menu doesn’t change, they don’t run out of pizza, and it is always good! Sixes also enjoy their friendships and being part of groups, so grab some pizza to-go for your next group setting.
Bonus for a Six: Auburn Bank - A Six is called “The Loyalist”. When thinking about businesses that are “loyal”, I think about Auburn Bank. Auburn Bank has been apart of the Auburn community for over 100 years and that speaks volumes. They are dedicated, trustworthy and will check every box for the Type 6!
