Locals We Love- The Faces of Downtown Auburn

Featuring Shelby Cohan of Charming Oaks Boutique

Nestled in the original Tiger Theatre, Charming Oaks Boutique is a gem in Downtown Auburn—and at the heart of it is Shelby Cohan, a longtime retail expert and fashion enthusiast whose warmth draws people in just as much as the clothes on the racks.

Originally from Montgomery, Shelby’s love for retail and creativity began early—making bows at Rosemont Gardens at just 10 years old. Since then, she’s turned a childhood hobby into a full-blown passion, one closet at a time. From helping friends style outfits to curating pieces for her boutique, fashion isn’t just a job it’s her calling.

Shelby and her family moved to Auburn for all the right reasons: the amazing public school system and a close-knit community to raise her children. Over the years, she’s done more than just sell clothes—she’s become a friend and mentor to many. “What I love most is the relationships. Some of my customers have truly become close friends. I’ve loved being an Auburn mama, watching my girls(employees) grow up and move on to do great things.”

When asked what she loves most about Downtown Auburn, Shelby doesn’t hesitate: “The sense of community.”

Speaking of community—you’ll find Shelby dining at her favorite local restaurant, Tacorita or grabbing a cocktail at Sessions. And don’t be surprised if you catch her dancing—her and her husband, Mike, once performed at halftime during the Iron Bowl!

Shelby’s style, spirit, and story are exactly what makes Downtown Auburn shine. The next time you’re strolling through town, pop into Charming Oaks Boutique, say hello, and let Shelby help you find something that makes you feel just as confident as she is.

Fun Facts about Shelby:

  • she may live in Auburn, but she screams Roll Tide! Her and her family enjoy spending their weekends in Tuscaloosa cheering on the Alabama Crimson Tide.

  • No fancy coffee, she likes it black

  • She started her own business with a friend when she was younger selling handmade barrettes.

Patio Dining in Downtown Auburn

Hurry before it gets too hot! Enjoy the “patio weather” now. So, who all offers some great patio dining in Downtown Auburn?

If you are looking for something family-friendly, we love Hey Day Market. Hey Day essentially has a really large “patio” and there is a massive greenspace with yard games.

Hamilton’s is one of my favorite patios to sip a glass of wine and “people watch” in downtown. I promise you someone that you know will walk by and you can invite them to sit down for drink with you!

Moe’s has a back patio that is a great place to meet up with friends. There is a bar and some additional benches. Perfect if your dog came with you!

Arriccia at the AU Hotel offers a beautiful setting with campus views! It is large, the seats are comfy and there is a peaceful waterfall. What more could you want?

Another family-friendly patio is at The Plains Taproom. It’s a large space, there are some cornhole boards or board games that you can enjoy while trying a new beer!

Lastly, if you are looking for the most Instagram-worthy patio, be sure to head over to the Collegiate Hotel! The cocktails and photos will not disappoint.
