For newer locals and students, Behind the Glass is an eclectically decorated boutique packed with the latest clothes, accessories, and more. Those who have resided in Auburn a little longer, however, fondly recall what it used to be – an art gallery, cafe, and bookstore, all rolled into one.
Opened in 1987 by Donna Young, she longed to own a store that specialized in selling items made by local crafters. From traditional art to books to jewelry and postcards, customers were able to take home unique pieces of the Lovliest Village on the Plains long after departing. On top of this, they were able to stop in the cafe for a sip or a bite to cap off a successful day of shopping.
After many triumphant years, Young looked around the downtown area and noticed it was lacking something crucial: a women’s clothing store. Deciding to test the retail waters, she went to market in 2004 and hasn’t looked back since. Originally reserving the clothing to just the upstairs section of the store, the gallery and cafe continued operation until the decision was made to phase them out and turn the space into a home decor section, and eventually a full-blown boutique in 2006.
Now, nearly 20 years later, Behind the Glass has solidified its place as a gem in the Downtown Auburn area, not only because of its products, but because of the spirited souls who run it. Donna’s daughter, Chloe, began assisting in store operations when she was just 13 years old. What began with a job as a giftwrapper and storefront worker evolved into taking on the position of General Manager, then eventually moving to full-time once she graduated from Auburn. Chloe and Donna have maintained their work-life balance as a mother and daughter duo by separating business from family time, aided by their genuine passion for what they do. Chloe has even begun bringing her young daughters into the store, hopefully planting the seeds for carrying on the family business.
Over the last two decades, Behind the Glass has had the pleasure of experiencing the evolution of the downtown area. With a constant stream of foot traffic from eager shoppers, they have gained lifelong customers, some of whom stop into the store just to reminisce on its roots and appreciate the special space it has become by making a purchase, or ten.
